In recent years, this curiosity has intensified with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). While science has made great progress in explaining the mechanics of the brain, it still struggles to explain this inner dimension. This is where philosophical and psychoanalytic perspectives, like Lacan’s, become valuable.

One of Lacan’s most famous ideas is that “the unconscious is structured like a language.” This means that our thoughts, desires, and even our sense of self are shaped by linguistic structures.

When we think, we often do so in words. Our internal dialogue, memories, and interpretations of reality are all mediated by language. This raises an important question for AI: if a machine can use language fluently, does that mean it is conscious?

Modern AI systems, such as language models, can generate human-like text, hold conversations, and even simulate emotions. From a Lacanian perspective, this places AI firmly within the “Symbolic” realm—it can manipulate signs and symbols effectively.

However, Lacan would likely argue that this is not enough for true consciousness. Why? Because AI lacks the deeper layers of human experience—the unconscious desires, conflicts, and the elusive “Real” that cannot be expressed in language.

AI and the Illusion of Understanding

One of the most intriguing aspects of AI is its ability to appear intelligent. It can answer questions, write essays, and even engage in philosophical discussions. But does it truly understand what it is saying?

From the perspective of the hard problem of consciousness, the answer is likely no. AI processes information syntactically—it follows patterns and rules—but it does not have subjective experiences. It does not feel anything.

Lacan’s theory helps explain why this matters. Human consciousness is not just about producing meaningful language; it is about being embedded in a network of desires, emotions, and unconscious drives. AI may replicate the surface structure of language, but it lacks the depth that gives human speech its meaning.

In other words, AI can simulate understanding, but it does not possess it in the way humans do.

The Role of the “Other” in Consciousness

Another key concept in Lacanian theory is the idea of the “Other.” For Lacan, our identity is shaped through our relationship with others—particularly through recognition and communication.

We become aware of ourselves because others recognize us, speak to us, and respond to us. This social dimension is essential to human consciousness.

AI, however, does not have this kind of relational existence. While it can interact with humans, it does not depend on these interactions to form an identity. It does not experience a sense of self or seek recognition.

Can AI Ever Be Conscious?

  1. It’s becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman’s Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with only primary consciousness will probably have to come first.

    What I find special about the TNGS is the Darwin series of automata created at the Neurosciences Institute by Dr. Edelman and his colleagues in the 1990’s and 2000’s. These machines perform in the real world, not in a restricted simulated world, and display convincing physical behavior indicative of higher psychological functions necessary for consciousness, such as perceptual categorization, memory, and learning. They are based on realistic models of the parts of the biological brain that the theory claims subserve these functions. The extended TNGS allows for the emergence of consciousness based only on further evolutionary development of the brain areas responsible for these functions, in a parsimonious way. No other research I’ve encountered is anywhere near as convincing.

    I post because on almost every video and article about the brain and consciousness that I encounter, the attitude seems to be that we still know next to nothing about how the brain and consciousness work; that there’s lots of data but no unifying theory. I believe the extended TNGS is that theory. My motivation is to keep that theory in front of the public. And obviously, I consider it the route to a truly conscious machine, primary and higher-order.

    My advice to people who want to create a conscious machine is to seriously ground themselves in the extended TNGS and the Darwin automata first, and proceed from there, by applying to Jeff Krichmar’s lab at UC Irvine, possibly.
